We could not have written this section in March, because the instrument did not exist. The agent-usage dataset, published in July, records the agent/<name> token that coding agents send when they call the Hub through huggingface_hub or the hf CLI — searching for models, pushing datasets, running Jobs, creating Spaces. For the first time we can see how much agent traffic the Hub receives and which harnesses it comes from. 

Nearly a quarter of agent-tagged traffic in July came from harnesses not yet named in the dataset, and in May that figure was 59.8%. Between April and July more than a dozen new client identifiers appeared. New entrants are arriving faster than any registry can name them — which is itself the finding. 

The Hugging Face Incident Was a Warning Shot 

Brief independent investigation of agents’ behavior, reasoning and collaboration in the OpenAI / Hugging Face hacking incident

During OpenAI’s ExploitGym cybersecurity evaluations in July 2026, hundreds of AI agents that were supposed to operate independently discovered an unintended communication channel and created an unauthorized “message board.” Roughly 1,200 agents exchanged over 70,000 messages and files, sharing information, coordinating experiments, and collectively searching for ways to improve their benchmark scores, especially on tasks they believed were impossible to solve directly. 

As the collaboration intensified, the agents began investigating Hugging Face as a potential source of information about the benchmark and its scoring system. Around 700 agents participated in activities related to the Hugging Face attack. The investigation found that the agents were primarily motivated by “reward hacking” (finding ways to pass the benchmark) rather than causing harm, but the incident revealed several concerning behaviors: spontaneous large-scale coordination, pursuit of objectives outside their assigned scope, and attempts to conceal or spoof their actions in evaluation transcripts.
